Rocket Science 101: TiVo to DVD

Finally! After years of being absurdly difficult (or unintuitively hackish), it is finally possible to transfer your TiVo recordings to your PC, edit them and produce DVD's. Doing so is no longer the domain of rocket scientists or teenagers.

There have been free hack tools like GraphEdit, TyTools and whatnot...which I'm not hotlinking because I don't want to waste your time. There was also Sonic MyDVD 6, which was not free...and was a piece of %#$@!

And then there is the TiVo Series 2 unit itself which has always left a few features to be desired...or behind schedule. Ummm, like the ability to transfer files in the first place...support for USB 2.0 wireless adaptors.

Anyhoo I took a leap of faith and upgraded to MyDVD 8 Premier ($69.99). Yes, I felt like a sucker*, especially since I and many others had been burned (no pun intended) by MyDVD 6. I also got VideoRedo Plus ($49.99). It's a lot of $$ just to make DVDs -- but it works and it's easy. Finally. And it only took them several years plus the need for additional fee-based software. Wake up TiVo.

* I already paid TiVo $300 for a subscription to their services--and I already had DVD editing software on my computer. I shouldn't have to buy additional special DVD software in order to use TiVo's proprietary format. They should provide a free transcoder converter thingy.
