Maybe a Tiger Will Eat Them!

Tigers are in trouble. We have been killing them for a long time and we've finally gotten rid of all but about 5,000. This news is not new. Tigers were in danger when I was a kid but there weren't enough caring humans to change their circumstances. Now I'm a "grown up" and the torches of power are gradually being passed. My generation has begun to run this country, the world...and tigers are hanging on by a tattered thread.
We talked the talked in high school and college. We were going to be better than our parents. We'd be proactive. Cure diseases, fight homelessness, respect our Mother Earth and her creatures. Well, kids grow up, start careers, get married, have babies and become consumers. And most of our idealistic promises are broken somewhere along the way.
Me? Sometimes I feel like I sit on the sidelines. I cannot see myself packing up and moving to Asia to personally join the struggle. So I join it by proxy, with my checkbook. I give money to World Wildlife Fund and Greenpeace? I guess that's the upside to being a yuppie consumer doofus with a job. I can give money to others who can put it to direct use. Kind of the Warren Buffett style of giving...only I have a lot less zeros to share.

One other quick note. The 60 Minutes story about tigers was featured on Yahoo! this morning only for a few hours. It was soon replaced with yet more senseless chatter of TomKat: What's Up Next for Tom and Katie? Who the #*$% cares? Wait, I know -- maybe a tiger will eat them! |
